Originally launched in 2010, Marcus Pierno’s Sanctuary Animal Series is a body of work that celebrates the freedom from exploitation and cruelty that some animals, usually from perilous situations, luckily managed to attain. He hopes that these works will inspire further awareness and compassion for the countless other animals that are not so fortunate. While agribusiness and other agencies of brutality in the world have sought to render living beings faceless and nameless, the Sanctuary Animals Series is meant to show us how animals everywhere should be regarded-not as automatons for profit, experimentation, or food, but as individuals-each with a name and the right to live undisturbed.

Marcus Pierno attended Fashion Institute of Technology where he spent a year in the Fine Arts program and also earned a degree in Illustration. In the summer of 1999, he studied painting in Florence, Italy. In 2005, he won a full scholarship to study at The National Academy of Fine Arts. Additional training was received at the Art Students League of New York. He has also attended Hunter College in pursuit of his other passion – Art History.

His clients have included Friends of Animals, The History Channel, The Arts and Entertainment Network, Cirque du Soleil, and The Civil War Roundtable of New York among others.

Marcus Pierno’s classically-inspired paintings cover a wide range of subject material: From pet portraits to rescued farm animals, landscapes to cityscapes, and multiple periods of history. He lives and paints in New York City, has exhibited extensively, and his work resides in various private collections around the world.
